Rat Identification
The most common rats found in Tennessee are the Brown rat and roof rat. Both of these rodents share many similarities, with the differences being the roof rat will have a blackish color fur and the tail generally being longer than its total body length. The brown rat will have a more brownish color fur with a much shorter tail. Both being omnivorous, but prefer grains and cereals.

Rats Problems and Damage
Much like mice, lawns and gardens provide meals for rats. Rats will then use homes and other building structures for shelter and safety. Rats can enter the home by way of their constant gnawing, chewing through wooden and plastic areas to gain access, these pests can also enter through vents around the home, gaps at the roof line, or any space large enough to force their way inside. Once they have found an entry point, their urine and feces quickly contaminate the area.
As mentioned above, rats are avid gnawers this can especially be an issue with electrical wires, by putting homes at risk of fires. Rats are known to carry diseases such as Salmonella, leptospirosis, and LCMV. However, not all rats carry diseases but any scratches or bites should be treated immediately by a medical professional.
