Recognizing Armadillos

The nine-banded armadillo, named for its nine divisions in the leathery armor, typically has a size akin to that of a domestic cat. This indigenous mammal of the southwestern regions of North America has extended its range to Tennessee and is presently considered prevalent. Armadillos have a diet comprising numerous insects and plants, and they predominantly engage in nocturnal activities due to their notably limited eyesight. When surprised, armadillos frequently jump and swiftly seek shelter.

Problems and Damage Caused by Armadillo

The majority of damage attributed to armadillos arises from their feeding behavior, resulting in the formation of holes that can reach several inches in depth. Armadillos are also recognized for their tendency to cause destruction in gardens, going so far as to uproot shrubs while in search of food. Furthermore, armadillos tend to establish burrows not within human living spaces, but rather alongside foundation walls, driveways, or sidewalks. Over time, these burrows can lead to structural complications if not addressed. It's noteworthy that armadillos can carry leprosy, which has the potential to transmit to humans through contact with their saliva. It's important to note that not all armadillos carry this disease; nonetheless, any instances of scratches or bites should be promptly attended to by a medical professional.
